Product Description

Taiwanese floral fabric, commonly known as "bedsheet fabric" or "flower-patterned fabric" in traditional fabric stores, first appeared during the Japanese colonial period in Taiwan and was popular from the 1960s to the 1990s. During that time, in addition to the Far Eastern Textile Factory in Taipei, Tainan Spinning Co. in Southern Taiwan and the textile industries in Hemei, Changhua also produced floral fabric.
Taiwanese floral fabric was once a common pattern on household items in Taiwan, but after the 1970s, it began to be seen as a cheap and outdated product due to its large production volume and low prices.
The origin of Taiwanese floral fabric is not directly related to Hakka culture but was widely used by various ethnic groups in Taiwan. Many articles discussing the origin of floral fabric suggest that because Hakka people are frugal and reluctant to throw away things, unused pieces of fabric from various households were gathered and naturally turned into colorful items, making floral fabric a representation of Hakka culture.
According to Chen Zong-ping, the head of the Sweetpeas Studio, in an interview in 2013, "Traditional Taiwanese floral fabric is not the same as Hakka floral fabric. Floral fabric is a unique pattern characteristic of Taiwan and represents Taiwan's unique cultural sentiment." Although the traditional Taiwanese floral fabric culture should be shared by all ethnic groups and not limited to the use of a specific ethnicity, it is undeniable that with the strong promotion by the Hakka Affairs Council, Taiwanese floral fabric has become a classic symbol of Hakka culture, and their efforts have been instrumental in preserving and continuing the floral fabric culture.
